EWING, GREGG SPIKE EC TO OPENING VICTORY

GREENSBURG - Returning conference MVP Mackenzie Ewing drilled 13 spike kills and Molly Gregg added 10 to lead East Central varsity volleyball to a 3-0 sweep of EIAC rival Greensburg Monday.

Coach Cassie Laker’s defending Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference champions posted sweeps at both the varsity and jayvee levels as both teams opened their seasons Monday.

EC’s varsity prevailed 25-11, 28-26, 25-16, led by Ewing’s 31-36 on the attack, while Gregg was 16-19

“We started off strong, executing what we do well right out the gate,” Laker said. “We did exactly what we wanted to do in Set 1 and we even started that way in Set 2.

“We were up 23-19 at one point in Set 2 and just folded. We were making errors and not controlling our side of the net. But we managed to keep our composure to pull out the win.”

Set 3 started slowly for East Central, which got its second wind midway through finish strong.

Gregg and Bailey Grunkemeyer led EC’s service game with four aces apiece, Gregg on 18-19 at the line and Grunkemeyer 14-15.

Junior Brilan McCory headed the Trojans’ passing game with 18 assists on a perfect 38-38 ball handling attempts, while Gregg added 17 assists on 42-43 chances.

Ashley Dudley’s flawless 18-18 serve receptions topped EC’s defensive effort, while

Ewing was 11-11 and Grunkemeyer was 10-10 to notch a perfect 47-47 team mark.

Alicia Rosemeyer posted six total blocks, included three solos. Alex Disbro registered nine defensive digs, to eight each for Gregg and Grunkemeyer.

Anna West’s 11 kills on 28-32 attacks topped the host Pirates.

“It wasn't always pretty, but for our first game, it showed us where we excel and what needs the most work,” Coach Laker added.

“The good thing is that the things we need to work on 100 percent is our control, and I have no doubt these girls will figure it out.”
