DAVIS LEADER OUT OF THE DARKNESS

QUERCUS GROVE - Aurora's Jarod Davis led the field of 97 total runners and walkers out of the darkness to win Saturday's sixth annual Donald Bowman 5K Night Race at The Vineyard Golf Course.

 

The annual fund-raiser for the Donald Bowman Scholarship Fund, a tribute to the late Rising Sun teacher, enjoyed temperatures in the low 70-degree range for its 9 p.m. start.

Davis, a 21-year old South Dearborn High School graduate, covered the 3.1-mile course in the top time of 20:52.

Batesville's William Starost, 45, nailed down the runner-up spot in a time of 22:58 to head the winning nine-person Spark Me Team, which posted a total time of 50:08.

Bowman 5K Run women's champion Carlee Boggs, an 11-year old from Vevay, finished third overall in 24:38, leading her Pacers team, also with nine runners, to the second-place spot with a 50:23 total time.

Fellow Switzerland County youngster Cooper Hon, 12, of Florence, Ind., was Saturday night's overall fourth-place finisher in a time of 25:09, leading the CAC team to third place in the group competition, with a total time of 52:10 from its nine runners.

Sibling runners Gracie and Griggs Carrigan - ages 12 and 9, respectively, children of Rising Sun alum and Mount St. Joseph University men's basketball coach Toby Carrigan - placed fifth and sixth in the 5K race, at 25:26 and 25:35.

The father/son combination of Vevay's Luke (10) and Tye Sullivan (39) finished back-to-back in seventh and eighth place, with times of 25:45 and 26:39, respectively, for their Pacers team.

Rounding out Saturday night's Donald Bowman 5K Run top 10 were Levi Cary, 14, of Carrollton, Ky., in ninth place (27:01) and Spencer Johnson, 16, of Osgood, 10th in 27:10.

Rising Sun's top runner, 12-year old Ethan Markland, finished right behind in 11th place in an identical 27:10 time.

A total of 58 runners, 33 women and 25 men, completed the sixth annual Bowman scholarship 5K run.

Saturday night's 5K Walk was nearly a draw, with Bennington's Dawn Powell, 49, edging out Rising Sun basketball standout and Thomas More College freshman Lucy Carrigan, 18, both registering times of 43:13.

Molly Carrigan Martin, 43, and Jeremy Martin, 46, Lucy's parents came in right behind in third and fourth place, in 43:41 and 44:49.

Vevay's Brittany Salyers, 24, was Saturday's fifth-place race walker in a time of 46:42.

A total of 39 walkers, 34 female and five male, completed the sixth annual Donald Bowman 5K Scholarship Walk.

Winning out in Saturday's team competition was the Spark Me crew, consisting of William Starost; Spencer Johnson, 16, of Osgood; Duke Johnson, 52, Osgood; Danika Brindley, 30, Sunman; Arlene Starost, 41, Batesville; Brandy Starost, 38, Batesville; Kylie Starost, 12, Batesville; Keri Johnson, 41, Osgood; and Aly Thackery, 15, Osgood.

Men's 5K Run age group winners Saturday night, included Cooper Hon; Spencer Johnson; Jarod Davis; Jacob Wooldridge, 27, Knightstown; Tye Sullivan; William Starost; Duke Johnson; and Rising Sun's George Selix, 62.

Women's 5K Run age group champions were Carlee Boggs; Rising Sun's McKenzie Ellegood, 16; Lawrenceburg's Destiny Lee, 21; Dillsboro's Lauren Foutty, 26; Versailles' Heather Sturgeon, 34; Lorrie Hon, 42, of Florence, Ind.; and Donna Burns, 57, of Turner's Station, Ky.

Women's 5K Walk age group first-place trophies went to Kylie Starost; Lucy Carrigan; Brittany Salyers; Caitlyn Gray, 27, of Lexington, Ind.; Holly Snelling, 38, of Lawrenceburg; Dawn Powell; and Rising Sun walkers Robin Selix, 57, and Sandra Dugle.

Men's 5K Walk age group leaders were Brent Gray, 34, of Lexington, Ind.; Jeremy Martin; Keith Mayo, 58, of North Vernon; and Rising Sun's Chuck Dugle, 67.
