FOOTBALL TROJANS KEEP UP BEAT, 38-7

East Central QB Alex Maxwell (12) follows a block by Nick Griffin (45) on his first of three TD runs in No. 1-ranked EC’s 38-7 season-opening win over Lawrenceburg Friday on Trojan Field’s new artificial turf. (Sandy Mahoney)

ST. LEON - It was as if the state title game was just a week ago. Some things at East Central High School don’t change much.

LIGHTNING FACTOR IN GRINDING SD LOSS

South Dearborn’s Bailey Whitelock (6) makes a last-ditch dive to try and stop Seymour’s Nate O’Mara (3) on his 24-yard TD run at 8:26 in the second quarter of Friday’s 7-0 opening loss.

AURORA - Sometimes you have to wonder if Mother Nature is a football fan, or not.

A pair of lightning delays with 5:53 left before halftime set back Friday’s South Dearborn home opener against Seymour for a full hour.

BALLOU REPEATS IN GAINES MEMORIAL

LAWRENCEBURG - Rocklin, California’s Robert Ballou made a last-corner pass on the outside of Jarrett Andretti to win the 15th running of the Dick Gaines Memorial Saturday night at Lawrenceburg Speedway.

Running in only his second Gaines Memorial in the No. 12 car, Ballou became the first repeat winner in the event's history at Lawrenceburg.

Nick Bilbee took the green flag from the pole position and stretched the lead out to several car lengths over the rest of the field.

New trails and walk focus on pollinators

Strolling through wildflowers and butterflies might sound idyllic – but area residents can actually do just that, thanks to two new walking trails.

“We’ve never seen more butterflies than on that trail,” said Aurora resident Chrys Cook. Cook is on the Board of Oak Heritage Conservancy, the local nonprofit that has opened the new trails. She recently led a “Pollinator Walk” at Hilltop Farm Nature Preserve in West Harrison.

Swimming pool improvement proposal based on dry facts

To the baby pool!

No hold that thought. At least until the Lawrenceburg Board of Works conducts a work session Wednesday, Aug. 22, on a proposal for a new “splish-splash” park at the city swimming pool.

The approved version, and there is no reason to reject it, probably will come in under the original $1 million estimate, but regardless the pool needs the upgrades, and I can think of far worse ways to spend taxpayer or casino dollars.
